The Compassionate Engagement Education Series offers a comprehensive exploration of trauma-informed care (TIC) and its integration into professional practices.

Hosted at Fresh Start Women’s Foundation in Phoenix, Arizona, this series comprises three sessions, each designed to empower participants with the knowledge and tools necessary for fostering healthy individuals, relationships, and environments.

SESSION 2:
Compassionate Engagement: Weaving Self-Compassion & Emotional Intelligence into Professional Practice

Wednesday, September 4 | 12:00pm - 2:00pm | Fresh Start Campus

Utilizing a trauma-informed approach requires authentically presenting yourself across settings and continuous practice of self-reflection and self-care. Join us during this session to experience a brave space to identify and discuss aspects of cultural humility, self-compassion, and emotional intelligence as they expand on Compassionate Engagement’s framework of trauma informed care. These components will empower your professional practice and aid in the development of a sustainable, restorative environment.

Participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the role of cultural humility in offering trauma-informed care
  • List three ways self-compassion impacts professional practice
  • Describe how emotional intelligence can promote compassionate environments through trauma informed care

SESSION 3:
Compassionate Engagement: Thriving through Resilience  

Wednesday, October 2 | 12:00pm - 2:00pm | Fresh Start Campus

While stress is a part of life, toxic stress does not have to be. Through identifying and understanding our own resilient factors and growth potential, we will build a strategic plan to combat toxic stressors such as: compassion fatigue, burnout, and moral injury.

Join us for this session of Compassionate Engagement to integrate mindful practices and communication styles into your own way of being and enhance your clinical practices, workplace environments, and relationships.

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe how self-regulation, self-control, and compassionate communication can enhance the therapeutic rapport and alliance
  • Compare strategies that mitigate compassion fatigue and burnout
  • Summarize the relationships within practices of mindfulness, self-compassion, and self-care

Presenters

Maddie-Martinez

Maddie Martinez, LCSW

Program Director, Southwest Behavioral & Health Services


Maddie Martinez is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) who is currently working as the Program Director for the Erickson Outpatient and School-Based Program with Southwest Behavioral & Health Services.  Maddie earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the University of Arizona and her Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California. She has over 12 years of experience in the field of social work with a focus on community mental health, school-based behavioral health services, and trauma-informed care. She also has experience providing clinical supervision for associate level clinicians working towards their independent license and undergraduate and graduate student interns working towards a career in behavioral health. Maddie has developed and provided extensive trainings for school districts in Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES), Trauma, Trauma-Informed Care, Resiliency, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness, Safe and Inclusive Classrooms, and Restorative Practices. Maddie is currently a Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) trainer and has provided the training to a wide range of populations including school staff, community librarians, college students and community members. Maddie is also an Adjunct Instructor at South Mountain Community College and Glendale Community College in the Behavioral Health Sciences Program.

Chelsea-Grieve

Chelsea Grieve, M.A.

Learning & Development Specialist, Southwest Behavioral & Health Services


Chelsea Grieve (she/her) received a Master’s degree in Communication with a Specialization in Women’s Studies from the University of Maine. She utilizes her prowess in communication as a Learning and Development Specialist at Southwest Behavioral & Health Services (SB&H) and volunteers in her community to raise awareness on domestic and sexual violence. She believes the power of storytelling and performance have the ability to bring people together and offer healing spaces for ongoing growth and conversation. As a change-maker, Chelsea is a founding member of SB&H’s Gender, Sexual, Romantic relationship Minority (GSRM) Workgroup that works to promote best practices in service delivery and an inclusive, affirmative culture. She has a natural gift for empathic connections and social networking that amplifies her passions and capacity to bring awareness and change to crucial areas of need.

Sandra-Solano

Sandra Solano

Learning & Development Manager, Southwest Behavioral & Health Services


Sandra Solano is the Learning and Development Manager at SB&H. She has a background in Education and before she started working for SB&H, she was a teacher in Guadalajara, Mexico for over 15 years. As a teacher, Sandra enjoyed helping both children and adults reach their academic goals and develop their own potential and learning styles. Since coming to SB&H in 2008, Sandra has incorporated her expertise as an educator and an advocate into her various roles within integrated community health. She has worked with families, children and youth in multiple settings, and facilitated engaging psychoeducational and clinical groups at Broadway Outpatient. She was promoted to the Children’s Supervisor position in 2013 as she supervised family coaches, therapists, birth to five clinicians and interns within a fast-paced outpatient setting. She assisted with the facilitation of clinical week trainings, oversaw children groups, and she was responsible for the tracking and submission of the DCS monthly/quarterly reports for SB&H. 

Having significant experience with providing direct care, supervision, training, and program oversight, Sandra continuously integrates her passions for quality, equitable care for children and families, as well as proper training and education for all staff to meet the needs of our communities and their own aspirations in professional development. She is highly involved in multiple workgroups and committees that seek to promote inclusivity, diversity, education, and quality services, as well as spearheading initiatives related to workforce development, quality improvement, and communication. Sandra is a founding member of the Ascent Leadership Academy and serves on the Guiding Council, which fosters leadership skills and qualities among SB&H employees to reach their professional goals. Sandra continues to grow professionally and has recently earned an Integrated Talent Management Certificate and a Training & Facilitation certificate through the Association for Talent Development (ATD).

Michelle-Sambrano

Michelle Sambrano, M.A.

Director of Prevention Programs, Southwest Behavioral & Health Services

 

Michelle Sambrano is the Director of Prevention Programs at Southwest Behavioral & Health Services. She is a skilled trainer in trauma informed care, healing centered engagement, and protective factors. Michelle has held engaging and robust trainings for both the general community and professional agencies to enhance their quality of practices and improve systems of community-based care. She is passionate about prevention efforts and supporting communities to build on existing strengths by addressing their own unique needs. Michelle has spearheaded numerous grants that directly promote supports and resources among marginalized communities and those facing substance use and suicide.

William Marsh

William Marsh, M.A., PsyD.

Clinical Director, Southwest Behavioral & Health Services

 

Dr. Marsh is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and a Clinical Director at Southwest Behavioral & Health Services (SB&H) in Phoenix, Arizona. Among the various services he provides and oversees, Dr. Marsh also serves as a clinical supervisor for SB&H’s APA-accredited doctoral internship training program, in addition to being a registered supervisor with the AzBBHE for associate licensed therapists. Having a passion for quality training, education, and service delivery, he has served as an adjunct professor at Midwestern University, Phoenix Campus and Northern Arizona University while also maintaining a small private practice. Fulfilling his many passions through the development of several evidence-based clinical programs, Dr. Marsh continues to oversee program development and implementation at SB&H.

Dr. Marsh has diverse clinical experiences and training that ranges from inpatient psychiatric and medical hospital-based care to school-based and outpatient programming. Through his work, Dr. Marsh presents with his authentic-self to foster meaningful relationships and brave spaces to collaboratively engage and work through challenges faced; utilizing evidence-based practices and experiential approaches to promote insight, awareness, and the motivation for change. Some of his areas of interest and specialization include: LGBTQIA+ affirmative care and minority stress, play therapy and sandtray interventions, Ericksonian therapy, family therapy, experiential therapies, treating ADHD and behavioral concerns, and working with affective disorders and functional neurological disorders. He has served as a moderator for the Couples Conference for the last 3 years, and is a recurrent member of the Experiential Master Class in NYC with Dr. Zeig. Additionally, Dr. Marsh has been invited as a guest speaker to various agencies, professional societies, conferences, and podcasts, as well as a guest-author for a local LGBTQ+ magazine.
